A busy high-street pharmacy in the Midlands had been experiencing a rise in late-afternoon incidents, including attempted thefts of controlled drugs. Despite CCTV and staff training, the team remained concerned about the risk of a more serious robbery — particularly during quieter periods when only two staff members were on duty.
In early winter, the pharmacy installed a Density security fogging system linked to its intruder alarm and to a discreet panic button at the till. The aim was simple: if a robbery occurred, the fog would rapidly reduce visibility inside the premises, slowing intruders and protecting staff.
The effectiveness of the system was tested sooner than expected.
One evening just before closing, two individuals entered the pharmacy wearing hoods and moved directly behind the counter, demanding access to prescription medication. The staff member closest to the till discreetly triggered the panic alarm.
Police later confirmed that incidents of this type rely on speed and visibility. Removing both effectively neutralised the situation without confrontation or harm to staff. No medication was taken; no staff were injured.
In the days following, staff reported feeling significantly more confident returning to work, knowing that an additional layer of protection was in place. The owner described the system as both a deterrent and a response tool, complementing existing alarms and CCTV rather than replacing them.
How the incident unfolded
Pharmacies hold concentrated controlled stock in a small footprint, often with only one or two staff on shift. The window between a threat appearing and stock being taken is measured in seconds. A monitored alarm tells someone a robbery is happening; a fog system stops the robbery from succeeding — which is the distinction that matters when there's a member of staff behind the counter.
